Okay, so it's been a little while since i updated my blog. So what's been happening? Well, i'm enjoying NSCAD, i've had a few assignments already and my lecturers seem to be pretty happy with my work. I am really loving my printed matter class. We had a really cool artist come and speak to us about his own little zines, his name was Richard Dedomenici. At the end of semester for this class we are having a big exhibition at Eye Level Gallery on gottingen street (just near my house). It's quite an important gallery in the area so hopefully a decent crowd will turn out. I went there yesterday to put my name down for some volunteering. They're organising a 'Cut and Paste' party, to make postcards for a writers' festival that we can sell there.
I just ate a banana for breakfast. And drank some water.
I have made a few friends around halifax. Alli, who is from australia, on the same exchange as me. She also lives in the north end. Last saturday we went to a Burlesque show and afterwards to a 'kegga' (big party with a keg, small donation and beer all night long) at her new house.
I've been wandering around the north end a bit, just taking photos and soaking in the small amount of sun that i can. I have a four day weekend and my load of work is not very big so i enjoy the fresh (and i mean fresh!) air on my wandering.
Wouter is doing pretty good, although we are both missing each other a lot. He is working on a paper at the moment about a tangible interface for controlling virtual blinds in video-audio communication, it's for CHI 2007 (the biggest interaction conference in the world). Other than that he's been working on his Photo Portfolio website, here's the link: http://photo.walmink.com
i think it's really nice.
Today i have my electronics class. We are building a chain reaction, each person has a different event that triggers the next person's.

temperature is cooling down
today it is -20 in halifax. It is very windy and snow is blowing everywhere. I am not looking forward to walking half an hour to school today. Sometimes i do miss the australian summer.

Back to School
Well it's been two weeks since i started uni in halifax now. I am enjoying the classes, today i switched from Art in Literature, which i found not too exciting, to Photography Seminar: 1960 to present. I think that i will enjoy this class a lot more, it's on tomorrow morning. So my timetable is as follows: Wednesday 1pm - 5:30pm Creative Electronics, Thursday 1pm - 5pm Printed Matter and Friday 9am - 12pm Photography seminar.
The creative electronics class is cool, very much out of my comfort zone! I learn about electronics and build circuits and stuff, it's pretty neat! I will be able to use the knowledge i gain from this class in interactive exhibitions, for example, i could set up a motion sensor to trigger a certain coloured light or to trigger a projection of a photograph to appear on the wall.
I love my printed matter class. My prof. is about 75 and shakes a little and is a really nice and friendly guy. We learnt how to perfect bind a book (our first project due today was to make an edition of two perfect bound books) we also learnt to coil bind, although i dont really like the look of this one.
Tomorrow i'll have my first photo sem. class as i just changed it today. I am looking forward to it, although not to waking up at 8am arh!
The photo department seems pretty good. I had to have a tutorial with the scanner and printing systems. haha, sca kiddies you'll laugh at the treatment of the 35 nikon scanner they have here. It's the same as the one we have and we tried some slides on it and it was disgustingly dusty so the tech. got a brush and a puffer and opened it and was not exactly friendly to it. It was funny in comparison to how precious cam is about our scanners. i haven't checked out the colour dark rooms yet although the black and white ones have a pretty nice set up.
Okay i better go to bed as i dont have an alarm clock yet so i am relying on my body clock to wake me up at 8am. ouch.

ps: there was a tiny bit of snow this morning on the way to school although it's been sunny here for about a week with the temp. at about 5 degrees! The weather station says tonight is -8. crazy weather all over the world it seems. Wouter flew back to the Netherlands last night so i am missing him, the house is a lot more quiet. His flight was cancelled from heathrow to amsterdam because of the weather but he got home okay.
goodnight!

NYC
23rd of december we woke up bright and early at 2pm and began our planning for New York City, which also coincidently coincided with our drinking..nevertheless, it felt like a good idea to get up at 5am the next morning, head down to the bus station and attempt to buy a ticket. Travel is quite expensive in Canada and the US, the bus being the cheapest option, although you are unable to reserve a ticket, despite having paid for it.
Anyway, we got the 6am bus to Bangor, Maine. Conveniently there was a connection to Boston about 45 minutes after our bus arrived so we were hoping for no delays, unfortunately a lady from our bus was caught up at the border for about 2 hours so we getting grumpy about having to spend a night in Bangor and lose an extra day in NYC. Fortunately there was another person on the bus heading to NYC who call his friend who called Greyhound who then waited for us in Bangor, excitement arose...and was then dampened again when we got stuck behind a slow ambulance for the entire trip to Bangor (usually about 1hr 50 min). The bus driver must have been in a good mood because he was still waiting when we arrived about 3 hours late. We raced inside to buy our tickets and jumped on the bus.
Intermission: The trip from Bangor to NYC was not the nicest ride for me, i was vomitting most of the way.
8:30am: arrive in New York, Port Authority. We walk to our accomodation, the Chelsea Hostel, on W 29th and 8th. As we were unable to check in until the afternoon we headed into East Village and then walked around times square and bought a cookie for US4 and a slice for US7. Checked in at 4pm, showered, brushed my teeth, which were still tasting like vomit, yep, gross. Slept till 10pm, then headed downtown for the biggest pizza i've ever seen. Went back to bed at 1am.

Hairdresser in Brooklyn, i think this lady was getting really angry at me and we were just waiting for her cronies to come beat us up so we sped to our lucky escape into the subway.
Fans of Leonard Cohen: ner-ner we went to Clinton Street, although it wasn't four am and there wasn't too much music either.
