on saturday i went to see some music at the speakeasy with frank. the bands were experimental punk rock. they were loud and they screamed and there was generally not much rhythm. But overall there was something kinda cool about them. i really enjoyed the way everyone looked, they were dressed in 1990's.
sunday i was grateful not to have a hang over. i've been going to this bakery up the street for coffee lately. they also sell belgian chocolates :) i did buy a small packet with four little ones but they didn't live up to the real ones wouter bought for me when he came to canada.
in my spare time i have been drawing and taking photographs. I bought a polaroid back for my medium format camera. it...is...so...awesome.
although i have to buy a filter for my lens as the photos so far are very blue/cyan.
it's morning time, ie. coffee time.

If you have the time to read this article, it gives quite an impression of the area that i am living in. I have grown a sort of newtown-equse attachment to this place.

I had the opening at Eye level gallery last night. It went really well, i made $30! :)

Today there is a snow storm. the snow flakes are massive! They are gathering on the branches of the trees. it looks really cool. it's been so long since it last snowed that i almost forgot how white it is!

Tonight i am heading out to see a band. Hopefully they are good, portishead-like apparently.

I have been busy with uni work. I've been working on my essay today. This week is the opening at Eye Level Gallery. I'll be wallpapering a section of the wall with some old wallpaper i found.

Gottingen St. Halifax, Nova Sotia, Canada. March, 2007.

Good Afternoon my friends.

Today the sun is shining and warming this little town to 13 degrees! this aint jacket weather!

I am busy busy busy with uni. Not too long to go, 34 days till i leave Halifax which i have grown to love. As a type away i am sitting amongst mounds of paper cut outs, books, scissors, glue, cameras, electronics and photographs are spread accross the floor. Only a couple more weeks of uni, i am very excited about our exhibition in april. I will definately send photos!

I guess not too much to report. Send me emails! i want to know how you are!

update.

hi!

so what have i been up to in the last week to ask? well! it just so happens that i have all the answers! here we go...

So i have been working hard shooting a series as the moment, i have been shooting 'undie portraits'. The model writes the name of their crush on some undies (33cents at the dollar store!) and i shoot from belly button to mid-thigh. i am trying out some Kodak E200 35mm. I am using my Nikon with flash and sx-70 polaroid. These images will be used in the exhibition that my printed matter class will have on the 12th of april, you all better be there! They will be in the form of a book while i'll have one large format print (from this series) on the wall, which is a photograph of an old lady hanging out her baggy silk undies on a pully clothes line. As for the rest of the show, well, you'll just have to come on opening night ;)

Last friday i did some volunteer work at Eye Level Gallery. They held an event called 'Dear Diary' where they asked people to read out old diary entries. It was quite funny, some people were very animated.

I am building a dark activated circuit in electronics, with the idea that when you cover something up (that has the photoresistor on it) the circuit will open, allowing it to switch on a projector i found. I am also working with these counters, little black boxes with white lettering inside.

The time has gone so quickly! i only have five weeks left of classes, it is usually this time that goes the fastest with so much work to finnish! I am really looking forward to moving to Holland, and i think Wouter is excited to see me aswell :)

talk to you later.

tonight there is a snow storm.

Yesterday i went thrift shopping. i found a bunch of nice clothes and a new bag which i needed as my old Nova Tours bag is quickly wearing out. Above is one of the shirts i bought, i think it's really pretty.

My cold hasn't improved much, so i am drinking hot chocolate and reading for my essay. It has been snowing for a few days here so there is lots of snow about. Although it has also been a bit warmer so it's all turning into mush which gets really wet...annoying.

I hope you are all doing well in little stralie.

Lovely snow but a cold head.

Shipping containers at point pleasent park and tyres at halifax harbour, 2007.

Well, i've finally become sick. It's not that i'm happy about it, i am surprised it didn't happen earlier. It's just a head cold, luckily this week is 'Reading Week' so a full week off. Surprisingly Cold and Flu tablets are only $5 here!

This week is going to be really productive though. I have lots of work to do, essays and books and shooting.

Yesterday was really nice, it was 2 degrees! i went to the flea markets and then for nice long walk. I found some Kodachrome Double 8 movie film, dated from 1992, and some still kodachrome from the 1960's! Kodachrome is a type of film that isn't made much anymore. The way the film is constructed is based on layers rather than dyes in modern film. I really like the colours and tones of kodachrome film. I am interested to see what will happen when i shoot it. Today there was lots of snow and on the way home i made patterns along the footpath because i was the first to walk along there in the fresh snow. Wouter said i should trick people by walking backwards so that they think i am going in a different direction hehe.

Nighty Night.

Happy Valentines my loves.

Susie and I went on an Architectural cruise down the river in Chicago while Maureen had a relaxing day with a massage. There are some very interesting buildings in Chicago. The Wrigley building, where the cruise started, has to be cleaned by hand. From the hotel we saw some men cleaning the clock face. My favourite building however, was this one.

Point Pleasant Park, Halifax. Icy water with cloud reflection.

Foggy Chicago morning.
Stepping out of the subway to this beautiful morning on my sleepy way to work.

Shooting from the Greyhound.
This film was x-rayed many times at the airport, i dont know if it was this that made the colours go crazy or from not being developed for so long and suffering extreme fluctuating temperatures.

I've scanned some more photographs; from chicago, montreal and our road trip.
i hope you enjoy.

Wouter in telephone booth in industrial parking lot along highway. Freezing cold and muddy. Somewhere between lunenburg and annapolis royal.

View of Lunenburg from accross the water. I found a new love for my 70-300mm zoom lens. It makes the subject so flat and i love it!

Back by Popular Demand

Okay, so it's been a little while since i updated my blog. So what's been happening? Well, i'm enjoying NSCAD, i've had a few assignments already and my lecturers seem to be pretty happy with my work. I am really loving my printed matter class. We had a really cool artist come and speak to us about his own little zines, his name was Richard Dedomenici. At the end of semester for this class we are having a big exhibition at Eye Level Gallery on gottingen street (just near my house). It's quite an important gallery in the area so hopefully a decent crowd will turn out. I went there yesterday to put my name down for some volunteering. They're organising a 'Cut and Paste' party, to make postcards for a writers' festival that we can sell there.

I just ate a banana for breakfast. And drank some water.

I have made a few friends around halifax. Alli, who is from australia, on the same exchange as me. She also lives in the north end. Last saturday we went to a Burlesque show and afterwards to a 'kegga' (big party with a keg, small donation and beer all night long) at her new house.

I've been wandering around the north end a bit, just taking photos and soaking in the small amount of sun that i can. I have a four day weekend and my load of work is not very big so i enjoy the fresh (and i mean fresh!) air on my wandering.

Wouter is doing pretty good, although we are both missing each other a lot. He is working on a paper at the moment about a tangible interface for controlling virtual blinds in video-audio communication, it's for CHI 2007 (the biggest interaction conference in the world). Other than that he's been working on his Photo Portfolio website, here's the link: http://photo.walmink.com
i think it's really nice.

Today i have my electronics class. We are building a chain reaction, each person has a different event that triggers the next person's.

Carli.
